A Mama's Upcycling Venture

One of the biggest frustrations many of us have in the season of young children is stuff gets trashed,   Of course you might be blessed with the type of child who is always careful and clean and view this a parenting fail.  Many of us however careful we are to confiscate all permanent markers, find that we let one within reach of a toddler or older child, even school aged child in a defiant moment and the wonderful new wall or storage container now looks weathered and wouldn’t even be accepted in the Free section of marketplace.  In fact, the now the kids don’t want to use the yucky desk or playtable anymore either.   We can chuck the old away, to landfill…. but who says we can’t inject a bit of style and sophistication into our homes without breaking the bank AND teach the kids we don’t just throw things away but fix them? In today’s post, I’m thrilled to share a fantastic upcycling project that will breathe new life into your space — turning that battered IKEA Trofast into a chic Hamptons-style coffee table!

Why Upcycling?

Before we dive into the DIY details, let’s talk about why upcycling is the perfect solution for families. Upcycling not only helps us breathe new life into tired furniture but also allows us to unleash our creativity without spending a fortune. Plus, it’s an excellent way to teach our little ones about the importance of repurposing and sustainability.

Materials You’ll Need:

  1. Electric Sander – deally, splurge and get an electric sander (I use a Ryobi Orbital but any should be ok)
  2. Sandpaper – i
  3. Paint primer – I used Taubmans 3in one primer, sealer and Undercoat
  4. Roller brush
  5. Hamptons-inspired paint color – I used British Gloss White
  6. Clear gloss – I used Cabot Clear Indoor

Now, let’s get down to business!

Step 1: Clean the Trofast!

The first step in this upcycling adventure is cleaning.  Ideally, the weather will be fine for a few days ahead, and you have a space outside to be a bit messy.  Get some sugar soap, any soap really and some water and a brush if super dirty or just a cloth and clean all dirt and what you can off the surfaces.

 tep 2: Sand it Down!

If your Trofast is heavily dented or marked, use a lower grit sandpaper like 40 grit.  If it is relatively smooth, start with 80 or 120 grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.  If there are big dents, you might want to fill with wood glue, ideally matching the colour you want to paint it.  Then switch to a lower grit sandpaper, to create a clear canvas for your upcoming masterpiece. Think of it as heading into the salon after a long hiatus except for your furniture, getting the split ends and gunk out before a stunning transformation.

Step 3: Prime Time!

Once your Trofast is all smoothed out, it’s time to apply a coat of paint primer. This step is crucial for ensuring that your chosen Hamptons-inspired color adheres flawlessly to the surface. The primer acts as a deep treatment, setting the stage for the vibrant transformation that’s about to take place.  The easiest option is to use an All in One.  Basically, the all in one covers up any colouring imperfections, conditions the wood and is cheaper than paint usually, so best to apply 2 coats, leaving 2 hours between each coat.

Step 4: Paint Away!

Now comes the fun part – choosing your favorite Hamptons-inspired paint color. Whether it’s a serene coastal blue, a crisp white, or a subtle gray, the choice is yours! Pour a little colour into the tray and using a small roller brush, dip it into the paint and then roll out the excess on the bumpy bits before applying to the Trofast.  Try to use smooth and even strokes to achieve that professional finish. Watch as your Trofast begins to shed its worn-out appearance and embrace a new, stylish identity.

Step 5: Seal the Deal!

Once the paint has dried and your Trofast has taken on its Hamptons hue, it’s time to seal the deal. Apply a clear sealant to protect your masterpiece from the inevitable spills, knocks, and general wear and tear of daily family life. This final touch not only adds durability but also enhances the overall aesthetic, giving your coffee table a polished, finished look.  In fact, I’ve never tried this until now, and it really made my end product shine. I used Cabot Clear Indoor varnish.
